With advent of ISO 9000 standards during 1987, the ISO 14000 standard holds out a promise to revolutionize environmental protection. ISO 14000 relies on changes in organizational commitment, focus and behavior rather than forceful coercion from statutory government agencies.
One cannot however deny that there is a desire building in the industrial sector to reduce waste so as to get greater returns on the investment. The accepted maxim is that technological development which cuts down on pollution results in greater profitability and competitiveness.
